21st Century (6-12)
The Grenada School District offers year-round afterschool skills and tutoring classes to students in 6th through 12th grade, thanks to funding by the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. The program also extends literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
Classes are divided into skills and tutoring options, and students may attend after school until 5:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Summer classes are 8-12 Monday through Friday for most of June.
Tutoring classes are held at the middle or high schools, depending on the student’s grade.
Skills classes are held at the Grenada Career and Technical Center. The skills classes include:
- Welding and Brazing — Learn beginner and specialized welding techniques.
- Construction and Building Trades — The fundamentals of carpentry.
- Culinary Arts — Prepare simple dishes in the classroom kitchen.
- Photoshop and Media Design — Graphic design activities, from computer art to t-shirt printing.
- Podcasting and Music Production — Computer audio editing and recording in a real sound studio.
- Pottery, Ceramics, and Stained Glass — Hands-on artistic creation in various media.
- Robotics and Computer Coding — The basics of computer and robotic coding.
- Urban Agriculture and Archery — Two distinct skills — small-space gardening and archery — merged into one unique setting.
- Weightlifting and Law Enforcement — Administrators select students to participate in this physical course.
Parents interested in enrolling their child in the summer session should contact their school office. Principals will decide which students are eligible to enroll in tutoring classes.
